E.on Back billing Query

Hi, 
I have just received a bill from E.on for around £300 for a flat that I moved out of in May 2019. The meter was in the basement in a shop below my flat so I was not giving regular readings for the 2 years I was there.  
The bill was generated because when I gave the final meter reading we made a mistake and gave the wrong value. They have told me that the new tenants corrected this on arrival but have only gotten in touch with me now. 
I'm unsure if the back billing ban applies to me here because although they have known about it for a year and a half before they contacted me, the mistake was mine and it is energy I used. 
I have negotiated to pay it off over 6 months but am now wondering if I have a case to say because they didn't contact me, I shouldn't have to pay the bill. Reading up on the topic doesn't seem to answer my case where an incorrect reading was given. 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Back billing arises if they didn’t produce any bills.
    what you seem to have is a final bill based on actual meter readings.
