Any suggestions for using up stale bread?
WHite bloomer loaf which was mega-cheap now past its best.

My latest cookbook Cook Simple by Diana Henry has these suggestions for bread and butter pud; apricot(dried) and moscatel (a sweet wine), chocolate and pear, marmalade and whisky, lemon curd and blueberry. Just follow a basic recipe and add the extras.
Other ideas that spring to mind are; banana and rum, mincemeat, Nutella and hazelnut... I wish I had some pudding now.0 -
Elderly bread is often okay toasted, if it isn't actually mouldy. Have beans or spaghetti on toast for lunch tomorrow

Use for breadcrumbs then use the breadcrumbs for a meatloaf? You need a about 1lb of (beef) mince and well I use some sausages and pull the meat out the skin. Mix together with an onion some lea & perrins, an egg and s&P. Bake in loaf tin for about 1hr 15mins. (You will find lots of ways of making).
You can also use the breadcrumbs for meatballs (same idea but use pork mince) bake in the oven to avoid them getting too oily. Also leftover chicken - mince for homemade chicken nugget things if you have children.
Also take pity on birds in garden, soak some of the bread in water use for bird table?? best wishes Mx0 -
If it was me I'd be breadcrumbing half the loaf and then freezing the crumbs for as and when needed
The other half I'd make a bread pudding. Not a bread and butter pudding.I find a bread pudding is great because it can be eaten cold as well as hot and can be stored for a couple of days if theres any left.

I find stale bread makes good garlic bread, or eggy bread, or you could do tofu "meat" balls with HM tomato sauce (break bread up, soak in milk till soft, squeeze bread, drain milk and reserve. Crumble a block of tofu, plus garlic, black olives and any other bits you fancy and mix thoroughly with the milky bread. Mould into small balls and shallow fry. Sauce is usual celery/onion / garlic, passata / tomato / peppers / seasonings combination, plus add milk at last minute). Serve with pasta, salad and some garlic bread.)
I also make "chicken nuggets" my style - finely chopped cooked chicken, sauteed finely chopped onions, cooked mashed veg (left overs), grated apple breadcrumbs, seasoning and an egg to bind. Form into any shapes you like, dip in flour, coat in beaten egg, roll in breadcrumbs and bake in the oven / shallow fry.

Slice some cooking apples in a pudding dish and add sugar to taste. Butter enough slices of bread to cover the apples and bake in the oven until bread is golden brown. Top with custard - yum. My grandmother used to call this apple charlotte, but I think a true apple charlotte is done with breadcrumbs. I never bothered to find out as this version is so easy and delicious.

... or use it in toasted pieces as croutons to put in soup? I often do that. Simple and tasty.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
