So the employee has a medical condition which has placed them into the situation of being classed as CEV.  They did not choose to be in this situation.  As well as financial impact, there is also impact upon mental health.  How many people can afford to live off of SSP?

Having been furloughed previously and maintained on furlough for 4 months as a result of shielding advice, the process of returning to work is not easy by any means.  There is a clear differential between those who want something for nothing and those where the situation is completely outside of their control.

I didn’t say I necessarily agreed with it, I was merely answering your question as to why a company might choose SSP over furlough. unfortunately many people do have to live off SSP, both due to COVID and those who have been ill previously but have never been eligible for CJRS they, like you would also be able to apply for UC, provided they don’t have over £16,000 in the bank or a partner working etc.

    Tough times for many sadly.
  • It may be worth noting that although CJRS has been extended it has a built in review after Christmas which is likely to mean that companies are required to contribute more that the NI and pension, this may also be a reason why they may be reticent to furlough.

Tough times indeed, I wish you luck and good health.
