Home Insurance - Building and Contents

Hello Good morning all. Does anyone know whether it is good to have building and contents insurance together or taken out as separate payments? When my mum wanted to renew policy she was told that she has 2 direct debits for insurance cover, one for building and one for contents. Swinton insurance informed us that if she combines the two it will be slightly cheaper. My mum and I was a little suspect thinking why with premium cover will it be cheaper to combine the two

  • Find a better broker or use a comparison site, see the price difference for yourself. Generally people do have the same insurer for B&C.

What's 'premium cover'? Does she live / own a large estate (doubtful if using Swinton), have high value items / antiques?

I am not sure about the Direct Debit issue.
Perhaps others can comment on this aspect, though:

I do believe that it is preferable to have the actual insurance company who is backing the insurance policies, to be the same company.

In a chain of companies on your policies, you can have the Seller, the Arranger, the Underwriter, then the Actual Insurer who is the one ultimately backing the policy. So it is preferable that the last two in this chain are the same for both contents and buildings.)

The reason is, if you are unfortunate enough to have a disaster like a flood or fire, or even subsidence, it is better that the same company (companies) are dealing with it so they do not get into any arguements about who will cover what.

    Do others agree with that?

  • If you have separate policies, in the event of a claim effecting both buildings and contents, you will pay an excess on each policy.

Most, not all; combined covers will only charge one excess in the event of a loss across both sections.
