Cannot Open Home Recorded DVD-R

I have some home video on DVD-R that I recorded on a Panasonic DVD player/recorder about 10 years ago.
Trying to play them in the same machine now & I get 'disc not recognised'.
I can play other home recorded DVD-R just not these.
Having trawled about on Google for an answer I have still not been able to play the DVD's.
Anybody any ideas as to the way to play these DVD's ??

Is that one of those combi video/DVD recorder machines that let you copy tape to disk?
This may be a disk that's gone bad, if you have access to a computer see if it can read it, or some other related software like http://www.makemkv.com may be able to extract it.  MakeMKV will almost certainly take a long time to decide whether it can extract the contents or not on these sort of disks recorded by those machines but it can generally do it, assuming the disk is readable to an extent.

    Thanks for that.
No it's not a disc gone bad as I have 6 the same.
    Will try Makemkv.com

I recovered some photo's from a camera for someone a long time back. I forget the brand but the software/codecs and format were
unique to that camera/brand. The disc was not in a readable format without the software being installed which they no longer had.

I had to do a RAW disc scan which took over 24 hours, this scanned the entire disc for data and recovered what it thought were files.

  • Sounds silly but is it finalised? I have the same panasonic dvd recorder. But if the disc isnt finalised at the time, other dvd players wont recognise the dvd.

It certainly could be a bad disc.  Just because other ones are OK does not mean a particular disc hasn't died.  Writeable CDs/DVDs can and do fail over time.

I wondered about that, but the OP says they are using the same machine.

When the OP refers to having "6 the same", I think that they mean they have 6 separate  DVD-R discs that won't play, especially as they state "them" and "these" when referring to the problem.

I suspect that the discs might not be finalised BUT I am using the same machine that I recorded them on.
