Looking for some advice. My sister has had a bit of a nightmare with her car. Had the turbo replaced at £900. It's been in and out about 5 times now back to the garage as it keeps going in to limp home mode. I think every time it's been after/during a motorway run. Some valves, some pipes, god knows what else.

She had her car back at the garage and they are "pretty sure" that it's this thing that controls the turbo that's the culprit. I think they may have put a second hand one from a nearby scrapyard on but don't quote me on that as it may not be the case. They're saying it's £200 for a new one. I don't know if this is £200 + their fitting charge or if it's £200 all in.

They pointed it out to my sister - so i'll attach the photos.

I tried searching and came back with boost control valve but i'm thinking it surely can't be that as the price of this seems miles away from £200 so now i'm thinking either i've got it wrong and the actual part is actually much dearer or i've got the correct part but it needs programming - which always seems to add a ton of cost.

If it matters any then i have fully licenced VCDS. I don't know how to do programming with it but i have it so would be able to if i had instructions.

The car is a 2005 VW Golf 2.0 TDI 140bhp. I think her engine code is BKD though i'd need to double check on that if it matters.

What actually is it so we can get a price check on it?
It doesn't look like it's in a bad location so if it's simple enough to sort, and from the photos it looks like it is, then it'd be easier to just buy a new one in and fit it ourselves.
But that depends if it needs programming or not.

I just Google searched "MK5 Golf 2.0 TDI boost control valve" and was seeing results in the £20-£40 range but they looked a little different to your image.

So it's none of what is showing up in my link and it's the one in your link that's needed, based on the info i provided?

A lot of them came back looking like so. Ok that guy has 98% and it looks a little dodgy but they looked like that in my search.

I did find one that looks like yours. Question is whether to opt for the second hand route or not if that's the part that's needed.

The one I linked to is the one for the BKD in your car. It controls EGR and boost, and is different to on other variants of the same basic engine. It even looks just like the one in your pic...

Your "98%" one is just EGR.

Is it worth trying a used one? Yes, probably. But a garage will be reluctant to do so, because they know damn well that it could fail in short order, and they'll be on the hook for it. Doesn't look exactly difficult to fit...
  • Agreed, even I could fit this by the looks of it.
Famous last words and all that :D

I'll need to check on her engine code for definite then to be sure as i thought it had a Z in it actually, but that might've been the MK4 that the wife had.
I agree with you - the garage are unlikely to fit a used one or at least want to, since they've probably seen her car way more than they'd like. The used approach was more if she wanted one of us to fit it (me or my brother - & he's way more mechanically minded than me). Even if she wants to go brand new, it'd be cheaper buying it in herself and having it fitted by the looks of it than having it sent to a garage.

I assume these things don't needed to be coded?

thats either the turbo control solenoid, or something to do with the turbo actuator. I dunno if either of those is the actual fault though.

I wouldn't have thought so - the old PD engine is fairly low-tech by modernish diesel standards. Not even common-rail.

Well they seem to have exhausted most things turbo related so far. It's about the only thing left by the sounds of it.

And i put the £25 used eBay thing to her. She says they've already tried a used one and it lasted 3 weeks, so that confirms that one then. Probably why it has a cable tie around it.

Generally reliable things from what i've heard. I was holding out for the PD130 in the Golf but people are wanting astronomical figures for them these days. Should've bought one years ago when they were just a bit on the dear side rather than being ridiculous money.
