" Why not use ApplePay or GooglePay for your contactless transactions?"

Personal preference I'd prefer not to use either of those.
    What is your objection?

What is the relevance of this to the OP's question about their contactless card ceasing to work?

Update: Okay, I have re-read the first post and I can see this as a solution, but it does not answer why two cards have lost their contactless function.

Sometimes, life is too short to pursue a given issue, and thinking out-of-the-box might pay off. Since the OP clearly has their phone with them them when they want to make contactless payments, one obvious solution is using the Apple/Google-pay functionality. But sigh, it seems  the OP would rather cut off their nose to spite their face.

    I am out.

Not sure why you feel I should have to give any reason, it is just something that I don't want to do. You don't even know what phone I have and what it can or cannot do - or should I change a contract or buy one to fix this.  Additionally it wouldn't solve the problem and wouldn't answer the question -  something that you have failed to do.
Pleased you are out, saves me wasting any more time reading your moronic comments.

My understanding is that if you were to present two contactless cards to a reader in a shop it wouldn't work so I wonder if it's possible that the NFC function of the phone has been turned on accidentally? Even though Google Pay or whatever has not been set up on the phone I wonder if just having NFC on is enough to make the phone behave like a contactless payment method and therefore cause problems when the real payment card is close by?

I guess the first move is to look for NFC in the phone's menus and if it's on, turn it off but maybe prior to that, see if contactless card works OK when separated from the phone

Thanks for the suggestion, I should have put earlier that on the bus I have to remove the card from the case - so it is not near the phone when I try to use it.  It was only after the problems today that I discovered the phone has NFC!
  • did you specifically use 'unlock card' at the atm or just check balance

No, I didn't know what that "trick" when I did it - I just used the atm to confirm the card itself was still valid.

I have now ordered a new card on that account, but the current one should be valid for 30 days so I could still give it a go.

You have NFC capability on your phone.
You can download a NFC app such as NFC tools and use that to see if your card can be read.
