Access loan denied - where to get help?

My son started an access course about 5/6 years ago. He suffered from anxiety & couldn't manage to continue. He had to repay the amount of funding he'd received (a few hundred I think) as he'd left the course early. Now he has started again, but has been told he has to pay for the course in full, as he was given funding previously. He has appealed, stating that he didn't receive funding, as he paid it all back, but it was disallowed. He has paid for the course (several thousands) but we feel this is wrong. The fee is written off for those who continue to university, but not if you have paid it yourself. Where can we go to try to get this decision reversed?

You can only apply once for an Access to Higher Education course.

As he left the course for health reasons your son could try to have the decision overturned due to Compelling Personal Reasons. This can be applied in the same way as it would be for degree funding. I’d suggest sending a letter detailing his circumstances and if your son saw a GP a letter from them as well to see if the decision can be overturned
