Indeed - but with a simple estate of c. £60K, employing a solicitor would be OTT.
That really depends on the executor and their confidence and competence.

Fair enough...but there's plenty of help on this forum if they DO decide to DIY and come across any problems.

I agree.  The point of my question was that if the poster thinks the cost (in the case of the particular estate) is likely to be more than £300 then that might be an avenue for negotiation, assuming they can get to speak to someone with the authority to make concessions when merited.

My dad has died. He left a will. There is no property involved and savings of £60000. Mum died six years ago. Do I need to apply for probate? I am the executor.
As said earlier it depends on the institution what their limits are.
Some examples, from my own fairly recent experience, probate not required if amounts held less than :
    Bank of Scotland - £100,000
    Nationwide BS - £50,000 (I think)
    National Savings - £5,000 (I think)
One online stockbroker - £5,000 and the entire estate is less than £25,000

Aldermore - £20,000 (acting for someone with £20,300 in the account and they won't release it without grant of probate).

How annoying. How much do you think probate will cost?
Probate already submitted, it's £219.50 but I need it anyway as the estate was above £325k with a property to sell.

In that case it's not so bad.
  • Thank you for you replies. I’m sure I can do the probate myself. There are 3 executors. I think this may make communication difficult as my brother does not live local.

The non-local brother can reserve his right to be executor so that the two of you can get on with things but he can step back in if he wants to.
If he does this, it would be fair to copy him into everything so that he knows exactly what's happening with the estate.

Even easier if 2 executors reserve powers, leaving one to get on with it. Agree about copying the others in
