14 day refund policy?

I recently returned an item back to Matalan and they told me I was just one day outside of their 14 day refund policy. The items (home decor) were not damaged, we just changed our mind. Is this normal to have such a short refund term?  I tried looking on the MSE info and everything seems to say according to "sale of goods act 1979" they must offer a 30 day return and refund?  Does this only apply if it is actually faulty or damaged?  Please help.

Per consumer legislation, you have 14 days from receipt (day 1 is the day after receipt) to inform the seller of your intent to cancel the contract. After informing them you have 14 days to return the goods. The seller also has 14 days from being informed within which to make the refund.

SoGA 1979 was replaced in 2015 (for consumers) by the Consumer Rights Act, although the legislation from which the above comes for online (distance) contracts is the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.
