Reissue of Cheques

I was shocked and had to phone my bank as the cheques were from an old cheque book.
When I phoned the bank they just said they could cash them, and perhaps they had been sat in someone's drawer for the past year.
I'm sure there was a report on Watchdog or Light Lunch ( one of those type of progs anyway) and they were doing a report into cheques.
Maybe it's just my bank?
If they are refused because they are out of date they have the right to ask you to re-issue them.
If you did not want them paid then you should have stopped them.0 -
Thought it was my ex husband at first trying it on.
ejones that's what I was told but now everyone else on here is saying 6 months.Karma - the consequences of ones acts."It's OK to falter otherwise how will you know what success feels like?"1 debt v 100 days £20000 -

Often banks charge more to stop the cheque than it is worth.
What do you do when you send a cheque for £5 and your bank charges £7 to stop it?
Do you let the person you sent the cheque to rob you, or do you let your bank?0 -

In my experience it is smallish dividend cheques that seem to crop up a lot of the time when someone has put the cheque in a drawer and forgotten about it. I will accept these cheque up to the value of £100 with no questions asked but I do tell the customer that the cheque could be returned as out of date.
They are still entitled to the dividend it is up to the individual registrars to either pay the original cheque or go to the hassle of returning it and then having to forward a new cheque.0 -

No it's not just your bank. They don't check the date that carefully, and most of them have something in their T&C disclaiming liability if they process an out of date, or post dated, cheque0 -
The reason many slip through is because small value cheques are not checked for dates.
The system should work in that the cashier that takes the cheques should check them. That doesnt happen in an effective way. The paying bank will check high value cheques but it is not cost effective to check low value cheques. So, the system has turned into one where if a cheque goes through, it goes through but there is also a chance it will be rejected as out of date if it gets spotted.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
