Trimming bath edges

My bathroom is only 1470 wide, I want to replace the shower with a bath and have found a nice one 1500 x800 which looks perfect. Can I just get the lips trimmed off?

Not really - you'll weaken the structure of the bath. One option would be to take the plasterboard / plaster off the wall at either end of the bath which should give you more than 30mm when you take into account the plaster finish or tiles.

But check you could physically get the bath into position before buying!

    How long is the bathroom?

Can the bath not fit lengthwise rather then widthwise?
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

It would just about, the bathroom is 1.47 x 2m so it’s a tight squeeze for a sink otherwise but doable. It seemed better to have a short fat bath with lots of room for showering. I’ll see how much the tiles give me or spin it round.
  • don't trim bath edges, hack off  bits from the walls so bath can fit in

IMO, it's OK to trim if the cut sides are supported by the walls, so 'weakening the structure' isn't a problem really.
However, I agree, that getting the bath into the position can be a problem.

All depends on how much of the wall you are prepared to damage to get the bath in....
  • If you really want this bath to fit in that space, there are two ways to do it; one is to trim the bath and the other, as said before, is to channel in to the wall. When it's all done and the walls are tiled/finished, the end result will look identical. But one method won't have risked weakening the bath.

I have bought the bath 1400 x 700, it is lovely quality acrylic bath and in your case no need to trim!
