Renting from family

Options
I injured my back at work in June and have been receiving statutory sick pay since.
My rent from a private landlord was £550 per month. I wasn't getting enough in universal credit and housing benefit to cover the bills. To stop myself getting into debt, I have moved into my brother and sister in laws house.
I pay £85 a week, which leaves me £12 a week for petrol, personal items and my mobile phone contract.
Universal credit will not help with my rent as I am related to the landlord, but  he usually rents this room out and I am getting no preferential treatment or family rates.
I am at my wits end. What can I do?

  • Sounds rough. I make suggestions, but with no judgement about your situation. You haven't given a lot of detail.
     - Get a new job that you can do with an injured back
     - Rent a room from someone else so you can claim housing benefit
     - Stop buying petrol and personal items. If you aren't going anywhere because lockdown and you aren't working, your outgoings are probably lower than normal. Get a cheaper phone contract
     - Negotiate with your brother.
     - Present as homeless to the council
     - Find ways to make money online or part-time. Do deliveroo or uber eats driving. Sell stuff on ebay.

    Good luck
