I’ve recently opened a hair salon on Oct 5 2020 and taken on the employment of a previous employer who worked there before. I applied for her PAYE before the cut off date of Oct 31 2020 but her HMRC reply came back that she hadn’t worked since April 5 2020. We knew this was a mistake or typing error as there was proof she had been working. Due to the time delay and sorting this out, her PAYE scheme has now passed the deadline date. I will now struggle to furlough her as well as I’m unable to claim for myself due to been self employed for a short period of time (4 weeks). I was wandering if there is anyone I should approach to help with this situation as now the furlough scheme has been increased to March 2021 this would have helped immensely.

There is not really anything you can do. As this employee has been with you for a short period of time, she has few if any employment rights, and it may be that you have to say that you can't afford to pay her during lockdown. Although furlough has been extended to 31 March, it would be unlikely that hairdressers will be obliged to remain closed past 2 December, but you never know.0
