Redundancy date

Options
Hi - when made redundant which date applies. Was told role being made redundant with immediate effect on 22 September 2020 but entitled to four weeks notice. Advised that effective date of termination was 22 September when role was redundant. But what about the notice period ?
Any help appreciated.

Were you paid the 4 weeks notice entitlement?

If you are asking in the hope of being re-hired and then placed on furlough remember that it is entirely at the discretion of your (ex)employer, they do not have to agree. You would also have to repay any pay in lieu of notice, any redundancy payments and any holiday pay.

Look at your P45 and see what date is on it. If you left the day they made you redundant, you should have received pay in lieu of notice.
  • Yes, received pay in lieu of notice but doesn't that mean employed up until that notice period expired. Did receive redundancy payment as well once notice period ended. Understand that re-hire is at employer's discretion but that could give me furlough pay until end March. Given is is so difficult to get other jobs that is massive.

Pay in lieu of notice (literally pay instead of notice) means just that: you are not employed in what would have been your notice period because you waived it.

You’re right , the potential for furlough pay up until the end of March is massive, unfortunately the costs to the business of NICs, holiday time building, pension contributions etc are also potentially pretty massive, expecting companies to feel charitable enough to volunteer to make those payments themselves and administer the scheme on your behalf when there’s nothing in it for them is a stretch. The sad fact for yourself & many others in a similar position is that the company has an obligation to look after its own bottom line first & foremost, not administer a quasi benefit scheme
  • Yes, fully understand but that doesn't pay the bills unfortunately. Am under no illusion that is employer's prerogative and is nothing but a cash outflow. One can but hope!

I don’t believe ex employers are going to be as charitable this time round if I’m honest. Cash flow is tight for many businesses and I can’t see why they would pay out the associated costs when simply they don’t have too.

Im really not unsympathetic towards the people this will affect at all, I just don’t like the idea of people pinning their hopes on what would be an unlikely solution to their situation.

Have you looked at one of the benefit entitlement calculators such as entitled to or turn2us to check your eligibility? Also speak to your local council to see if there are any schemes in place with them.
