I have also been lucky in that over many many years I have never had a single problem.
That said, I can see it is frustrating in that if you need to contact them it is difficult with long wait times. The extended wait times are almost certainly due to COVID and the vast increase in customer numbers because of their interest rate movements.1 -

Would closing your account solve the problems you experience?
What precisely is the problem with your online access? As all that is needed is your NS&I number, surname and password. If you have forgotten your password, it can easily be reset online. All you need for this is your NS&I number (which you say you have), your surname and the phone number you registered with NS&I.
