Hello all
apologies if this is a repeat question.
couldnt find an answer anywhere..
my credit rating is not good and one of the things i wanted to do is get a credit card ( advised by clearscore ) and on my clearscore credit score offers, i had few c cards showing as pre approved. I applied and I got rejected saying i am not eligible.
These were credit builder cards with 34% plus apr.
i would really wants to get a c card to improve the ratings.
any advice please

The rating isn't what your improving but your credit history.
Don't know who you applied at but give capital one or aqua a try ?0 -
I don't believe any of these comparison style checkers work, these guys make commission when someone applies / takes a card so it's in their best interest to just encourage as many people as possible to apply. It's all a scam, if you ask me.
You can try the eligibility checkers on the cards own site (ie Capital 1 or Vanquis) and you'll get a better result from them, it's still not guaranteed though.
I think most of the lenders are tightening their lending at the moment because of Covid so you might be better off waiting until next year. Get a copy of your credit file and see if there's anything bad on there that can be fixed easily, make sure you're on the electoral roll etc
It's difficult to give advice without knowing more about you're situation and why you have / how you got a bad credit history (ie if you've got CCJ's or recent defaults, the chances of being accepted will be pretty slim at the moment.)0 -
Pre-approved doesn't always actually mean what it says - which is something I've always been against - as in the small print it's something like 'subject to final checks' - when they do the 'soft search', they only see limited information, but it indicates to them whether you're a customer they want or not - but when they do the 'hard search'for the full application - they then get to see everything. You mention your rating isn't good - do you have any defaults/bankruptcies/CCJ's etc on your file? If so - are any of them recent?
The usual suspects for credit building cards are Vanquis, Capital One, Aqua - and there's a new kid on the block from Zopa - you can try the eligibility checkers directly on their websites (don't use a comparison site) and see what they say? Don't apply for all in one go though - you've already made one application - one more might be worth a shot - otherwise wait a few months and then try again.0 -
If you can been declined by the main high interest credit cards then I would do nothing for a year as you have bigger problems than not being able to build your credit history up.
Get your credit reports and see if there are any issues.2 -
All Clearscore are doing is hoping you will get one via their links so they get a nice kickback for you taking a card out.
If you do get a card, then make sure you pay it back in full each month.Life in the slow lane0 -

Don't know who you applied at but give capital one or aqua a try ?I found these in my credit report
- 3 defaults - 1 credit card, 2x overdraft ( they are same, one of them is from bank and other one from the debt collecting company )
- 5 hard searches ( i tried to open a current account that resulted in this )
-2 missed payments ( one year old and 3 months old)
- i have no credit card ( off track according to clearscore )
This is the case
on top of this i had a loan which was £4k that i paid off 2 months ago.Credit card default - i have set up a plan and I making moNthly payment
OD default - have not done anything about it yet.0 -
Get the defaults settled.
You're very unlikely to be offered further credit until you've paid back the old defaulted debts, as lenders won't trust you to repay them.0 -
