Removals company running a day over!

Options
We are due to complete on our house tomorrow. As we are moving into a rental, we arranged to empty the house by today. The removals company started packing and loading yesterday and had all of today but they didn’t finish like they were meant to. They kept saying they would be back in the morning so I wasn’t too concerned. Then just before they left they said they will be back at 12 pm as they have another small job in the morning and will come to us next. I just can’t see how they can do another job and get to us by 12. They have moved everything left into the garage and it is mostly packed.
What happens if they don’t show up till late afternoon?! I guess technically we are in breach but in practical terms, what actually happens? Obviously assuming they legally complete early. If their completion monies arrive late then that would solve the problem. They have a buyer and then there is us. Just 2 properties in the chain.

  • If the completion does happen early, I'd ask the buyers to wait while things were removed from the garage.  I'd also be leaving a very negative review about the removals company.  I'd be tempted to finish the packing myself if I could.

The other problem is they are storing it for us for a couple of months until our purchase is available. If it were moving to where we are living now then I would have just got a man with a van and got it moved this evening or earlier tomorrow. There are still appliances and big boxes.
Thank God I arranged it for a day earlier otherwise we’d definitely have been in breach.

What does your contract with the removals company say about delays etc?
I would be ready with alternative arrangements to collect and store the items overnight (eg by hiring a large van for 24 hrs) as that may be cheaper than damages if your completion is delayed.
  • Great news it was resolved!! I hope when you get in to your new home it’s slightly less hassle!
