Previous Claim failed but now found loan number (HSBC)

Options
Hi
I made an attempt to claim PPI from HSBC for a loan I took out in 2000 and finished paying in 2008. I made the claim in 2010 and HSBC stated they didn't keep records longer than 6 years old and without a loan number couldn't do anything.
I have since found the loan number after clearing out the garage. It got packed away during a house move.
Would I have grounds to still be able to claim?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

Does the information you have show whether you have PPI or not?

  • What kind of loan was it?
Personal loans were not available for 8 years.
Loan number on its own? - What does that prove? Did you find any statements showing you had PPI ?
I am quite sure that today they will not have records going back 20 years.
  • Hi
Thank you for your replies. Yes. I have a document with the ppi contract with it. It was a personal loan.
Apologies for the date mix up. It was paid off in 2008.

If you took it out in 2000 and paid it off in 2008 - that is 8 years or near enough.
At that time 5 years was the maximum for a personal loan.
If you can show that you have made a claim before last August's cut off date - send the information to them and see what they say.

They’ll likely time bar you now as I understand your original complaint was in 2010.
Re lengths, some lenders had personal loans that ran up to 7 years

From memory, I believe that originally, for a loan under the consumer credit act you could not borrow above £15k (or maybe 10k) and not for a period greater than 5 years.   Banks could lend outside of that but it wouldn't have been on a CCA regulated personal loan but an unregulated loan. Some banks used a different name for the unregulated loan. It certainly had a different loan agreement.  Then there was a change in the CCA that allowed a longer term and greater amount under the CCA and the issue went away.   I really cannot recall when or the specifics as we are talking several decades.

I know for a fact the co-operative bank were doing personal loans from £2,000 - £25,000 over 1-7 years until they stopped selling them a few years ago

Back when I was doing them at a bank we couldn't go over £15k or 5 years Anything outside that had a non CCA agreement.  However, we are going back to the days when agreements were paper based and the figures were handwritten and you used carbon copies.
