Can I fix this shower dial myself & how?

My shower is stuck on the hottest temp, and is too stiff to turn back down. I've taken the dial off and can see this underneath. I've tried spraying WD40 on it but still can't get it to budge. I'm thinking I need to unscrew the middle bolt but don't have the right size wrench for it.

Is there anything else I could try with this myself?

Are you able to turn the hot and cold water off to the shower?

Is the hole on the edge of the grey disc (where the W-shaped cut-out is) a grub screw? If it is, I would try loosening the grub screw and see what can be seen when you remove the grey disc.

Really you are looking for the name of the valve so you can find a replacement shower cartridge. It is likely that the existing one has failed. It's probably going to be easier to buy an entire new valve.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

I would try popping the circlip off first and try pulling off.

If a no then slacken grubscrew.

Make and model number would help?

check to see if you can get reasonably priced spares first. last time I took a tap to bits trying to fit it I just spent too much time doing it, only to find it was a specific spare I needed from the people that made the tap that wasn't available anymore.
or you might find the parts, but they will cost more than half the price of a full new shower
  • It's a Triton Dart Eco shower, instructions on google, if you can't change temperature it's that small central splined shaft that needs to turn so careful you do not damage the splines. The large grey part is also on larger splined area and you need to take out the grub screw and lever it off but access is poor to get good leverage. When mine failed I managed to find one on the internet for £120 4 years ago, that was old stock as they do not make this model now and I changed the whole fitting,
    good luck
  • Good advice above.

I wouldn't remove that circlip, tho', as that is pretty clearly holding the actual cartridge together - the brass bits wot you'll almost certainly end up having to replace. It shouldn't matter if you remove that clip, but it just won't help.

That grey collar seemingly has a grub-screw which will be either screw-slot or possibly 'hex' key. If you don't have anything to fit in there (is it angled slightly upwards so a tool can get straight in to it?) then don't go any further

Also, as said above, track down a replacement cartridge FIRST before going any further. There's a remote chance you can 'fix' the existing one - it could just be a bit of debris that's preventing it from turning - but most likely it's knack'ed.

If you do start to take it apart, keep taking photos like the one you have, so it'll go back in the same position.
