After seeing Martin’s post on claiming tax relief for working from home, I did this off my own back as I am working more regularly from home but then was told by a colleague that my employer needs to authorise this as they will need to amend my tax code. Is this correct? Should I have asked my employer before applying for the tax relief?

Don't expect to receive a cheque for this money though. It is done by altering your tax code, which is what indicates to your employer how much tax to take off your payslip – it should be amended in your personal tax account within a couple of days. The result will be less tax taken off each month for the rest of the year which means you'll take home more.
Employer doesn''t amend Tax Code, HMRC does.1 -

Tell your colleague to stick to the day job.
Your employer cannot amend your tax code and neither can you.
HMRC will arrange for an amended tax code to be issued and it is upto your employer to then implement the new code the next time they pay you.3 -
Appreciated... I didn’t think I’d need to seek permission beforehand, but that little seed had doubt had been planted!!0
