Bit harsh, when most building societies will refer to their savings accounts as "investing", "investing in", "investments", etc

And remembering of course. that building society members fall into one of two categories (or both):
borrowing members, or investing members

Investments fall into many categories. Plain savings accounts are one such category

You wanted to make a deposit and earn interest: that is precisely what is happening. It would only be "underhand", or "a scam", if they conjured up some reason to deny you interest.
