AA breakdown cover

I have cover with the AA & paid £230 last year & this
year they want £ 440 ! So of course I rang them up & they were surprised that I wanted to leave because of the price increase! I hadn't had any call outs in the previous 12 months & I have been a member for 11 years. They offered me a 'discount' down to £250 but I said that's no discount because its still more than last year! This went back & forth 'our prices have gone up' blah blah. So I am off to the RAC with exactly the same cover for £191 ! I think its outrageous that they 'expect' you to renew at almost double the price & this happens every year with the AA.

The AA and RAC trade on their brand recognition only.
Playing with the RAC's website, I can't get it higher than £181 for two people, full national personal cover - unless I add the ludicrous fripperies like me paying for a new battery, tyres or keys up front.

Even £180 is way more than the market price. What cover were the AA suggesting for your £440?
I pay less than that... including worldwide travel insurance and full European breakdown cover.
BTW, "membership" is an outdated concept with the AA. They haven't been a member-mutual since 1999. You are just a customer for their roadside breakdown insurance.0 -
ok thanks - who is your cover with ?

..had the same issue, it happens every year and does my head in. Every year you have to phone them up and "complain" about the way above inflation price increase. However this year they actually reduced it back to less than I paid last year?!(NB I paid £90 for the basic breakdown cover including spouse...)I was prepared to leave, but have read some horror stories regarding RAC's "service" so would probably have gone with Green Flag...."It's everybody's fault but mine...."0

I'm ruled out of many of the cheaper suppliers because I choose to drive older cars and have a ~3.5t camper van.0 -
I pay £156 a year for a Nationwide account and I get breakdown cover through that along with travel insurance and some other bits. Even £250 seems steep.0

I've managed to get a "special 2 year deal" with the AA where I only pay an extortionate amount more than Greenflag, but it is fixed price for 2 years, so I only have to ring up every other year and argue that the price has more than doubled. I'm on my third.I like the AA. They cover me for cars, vans, motorbikes of any age and there is none of this nonsense about having to wait until the garages close to ensure I get taken home to fit my own cheap eBay part.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
