Auto renewal dispute

Hi all,
My issue is I cancelled payment for an insurance policy a couple of years ago at the very end of the term with dial direct after they tried to auto renew the policy and double the annual cost. I didn't give them 30 days notice. Obviously they came after me with fees for late payment etc, it has now come to BW Legal who are asking for £170.31 35% discount offer until 13 Nov. Does anyone have any advice regarding whether it is worth taking it any further or just pay the offer?

Thanks

If the fees are those specified in your agreement, paying them now would be the wisest thing to do.

So you just cancelled your payment but didn't actually tell them not to renew your policy?

It looks like OP didn't tell them not to auto renew.

They did renew. OP then cancelled DD thinking that would cancel policy??

    OP please clarify.

OP I would pay what you owe. Discount is good.

As above, cancelling your payment doesn't remove any obligation to pay the money if your agreement says otherwise. I'd take their discounted offer and get this sorted before it turns into something bigger
  • I saw the auto renewal price tried to call once and couldn't get through. So I cancelled the dd and forgot about it. Should of give 30 days foolish error, think I'll take the discount. Thanks

    Kudos to Admiral Insurance.
Today I discovered that they had auto renewed me on 6 September. I sent them a polite email suggesting that they should have checked the National Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) Database before auto renewing, where they would have discovered that I had put alternative insurance in place, and I would like a full refund. Less than 4 hours later they have emailed me to confirm that they are providing a full refund, with no cancellation fee.
Earlier this year, they gave me an unsolicited £25 refund due to the reduced cars on the road during lockdown #1.
This year, I would have renewed but they always jack up the previous year's premium, and I wasn't prepared to haggle it downwards yet again.

the onus on cancelling/lapsing insurance is on you, not the insurer. It saves you so much hassle in chasing for a refund.

Diarise your renewals and job done, the insurers cannot guess what your going to do and move to another insurer

Nice of Admiral to do that one year I got a renewal from Hastings but got a better deal using comparison sites. £100 cheaper same cover same company hastings. Thought with it being same company same name and car it would be ok. No hastings renewed the existing policy @over£600 and took double the money. Making me go overdrawn took weeks for the refund. So moral of story always ring them and tell them not to auto renew

I got caught this week by assuming that my policy would auto renew.  Its with Quotemehapy.  I got their renewal email about a month ago, checked around and thought it  was a good deal so decided to just let it run for another year.  Its years ince I've not got better deals and just moved my car elsewhere.  All sorts of emails now saying that my insurance has expired, my Multi Car discount has gone for another car I have with them etc.  I can't get another Multi Car discount and have to apply for a fresh quote (twice the quote they gave me to renew).  I suppose the message is always check to see if policies do auto renew or not.  This one didn't and I had to click through a link in the email to renew.  Looks an expensive oversight from me :(

I suppose the message is always check to see if policies do auto renew or not.

The message is really to read the renewal letter/email as they are required to state what happens next if you do or do not wish to renew.
