Tariffs without a standing charge

Are there any energy tariffs that don't have a daily standing charge, but include such cost as part of the energy usage ?  The only reason I'm exploring it is because from Spring to Autumn we use very little gas, if any, due to our water heating being from Solar Thermal.  so 3 or 4 months at 22p/day for no use of gas adds up.  We might also benefit with electric as we also have Solar PV.

  • I suspect those that dont have a much higher energy unit cost to compensate, and therefore you might actually be better off going with one with a standing charge. Have you tried the comparison sites?

Just go to the Citizens Advice website and enter your usage for the relevant period as 1kWh or whatever. Neo Energy are offering me a daily charge of 12.67p with no exit fees so it probably won't get much better than that. You could consider using them for the summer and a different no exit fee tariff for the winter.

It's the total annual cost that matters, not the unit rate and s/c. Ebico do, but it has a minimum annual charge instead, so it effectively cancels out.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Yes, I used to be on Ebico but they then, completely misleadingly, introduced the minimum annual charge mentioned above, so I left.
I have PV and a diverter for my hot water and cook by electric. I've moved to Octopus Agile for electric, a variable tariff which requires a smart meter, which may work for you if you can largely avoid the 16.00 to 19.00 slot when it is very expensive but it even goes negative occasionally! My average unit rate including standing charge and VAT January to early August was 14.6ppu and from then to the end of October it was 17.9p incl. That's with a SC of 20p a day, so increasing my usage could reduce my average unit rate. If it works for you ask for my referral code and we can share a £100!

Ebico, as mentioned by macman is in the process of being taken over by British Gas so they may just incorporate standing charges as per their usual rates.

There is a company called Utilita who don't impose any standing charges - https://utilita.co.uk/energy#:~:text=We're one of the, don't use any energy.&text=you budget.,you to budget every month.

And of course you can use the Energy Club on this site as well - listed under 'Tools and Calcs' on the right hand side here >>>>>
