Refund from STA for a flight where the airline says they refunded STA before they went busy

Hi all,

Looking for some advice for a friend, they booked a flight via STA in March via Emirates, they had to cancel due to Covid, they went through the usual lengthy refund process, Emirates have now said they refunded STA in July just before they went bust but STA didn't contact them to pass on the refund. Emirates said its not their issue anymore, ABTA said its the airlines issues. 
They are going to try a chargeback but because its longer than 120 days it might not pay out. 
Does anyone have any advice on what to do?

There is no claim on Emirates, as the contract was with STA.
If too late for chargeback, try an S75 if a credit card was used? The key date for chargeback is not the booking date, but the departure date: is that within 120 days?
