Moving furniture without a van. What are those trolley things called?

I have just completed on our house purchase and we are moving about 300 yards so not  far. All our boxes, bags and things such as the wardrobes (when they are broken down) will fit in the back of our estate car and can be moved biy by bit. I have a couple of weeks in which to do the move so not a one day job.
I have 4 items, fridge, freezer, welsh dresser which splits into 2 and another dresser unit which will not fit in the car. (No sofas, beds or other big stuff as we have bought new.)
Now my quandary. I was thinking of hiring a van for a day and getting a couple of family members to help me but it seems such a waste for so little furniture and the nearest van hire is abut 12 miles away.  So I was wondering if I could  buy one of those truck things with the 2 big wheels like you see delivery men use for appliances and get my 2 sons to get the items round to the new house using one of those. Does anyone know what they are called as when I've looked online all I'm coming up with are some things which look like a big skateboard which would be useless and I probably wouldn't trust them to hold the weight.

Do you mean a sack barrow?  Also called a hand truck.

Also try "sack truck" You can hire them from tool hire centres, some are designed to climb stairs. Hired ones will be much better than a cheap bought one.

  • Yes, that's what I meant. Thank you all.

    This ^^^^
Definitely don't buy a cheap one! A few years back we needed to get hold of a sack truck in a hurry for a move and purchased the basic model from our nearest DIY store. It broke under the weight of the first item we put on it  :(

We were then given an old Post Office sack truck that was fairly robust, succumbing a few years later to a flat tyre.

Three years ago we replaced it with a Cosco three-in-one sack truck (think DH bought it in Been & Queued) which has been fab. We used it for very heavy antique furniture removal as well as shifting huge plant pots and it's still going strong.

Not cheap but definitely worth the investment.

For a few items only and if you've no plans to use it going forward, hiring is probably your best option.

They were in our local Aldi on 24 September, but not recently. Only £9.99 but not very big. Doubt they'd be big enough for fridge/freezer or dresser. The round one was only 15" diameter.
