Our company is asking us to come in during lockdown to prep the store for Xmas when we are open to the public . This way they will pay us out wages and commissions but won’t be earning any new commission for the month is this fair

Presumably you will have the chance to earn commission when the store opens, which it won't if it isn't made ready, so I would have thought that it makes total sense to do the work. The alternative might be redundancy.0

Of course it is fair. Would you prefer to be sat at home and lose a fifth of your salary instead?3

The OP has been asked to go to work and get paid normal wages.
Seems fair.
What have I missed as to why there is a question?
Presumably, prepping the store for Christmas is usually done out-of-hours by night-shift, so the people doing that task would not normally have the opportunity to earn commission. Just this year, regular staff are being asked to do the task during regular hours rather than 'seasonal staff'.
If the OP is not in the store doing this work and getting paid, the OP would be at home on furlough and still unable to earn commission.1 -
Hmm. Does the furlough calculation include commission? Maybe the OP thinks he would be better off sat at home based on a furlough calculation of wages paid in October.JamoLew said:

Either way, tough titties, if his boss wants him in so be it.0 -
OP, you won't be earning any new commission during lockdown, whether you are working or not. It would seem better to get things set up so that you are ready to go again as soon as you are allowed to do so, rather than waiting for lockdown to be relaxed and then having to spend time getting things ready. It's not difficult!
'Wander' - to walk or move in a leisurely manner.
'Wonder' - to feel curious.0 -
It’s your job. You can refuse if you wish, but you won’t earn anything that way and risk losing your job..0

Sometimes I despair at the mentality of some people.1

That was one of my criticisms of the furlough scheme - far too generous and no attached conditions.
Maybe furloughed workers could be “encouraged” to do something socially beneficial in order to receive the full 80%0 -
Well considering carers, nurses, delivery drivers and thousands of other key workers have to work all the way through this. I'm sure you can to.
If you have a job at the end of all this , count yourself lucky.
