Smart Heating System - please help

Hi I’m currently in the market for a smart heating system for a large three storey five bed house. I’ll underfloor heating on the ground floor, Worcester Bosch Boiler, separate water cylinder/tank.

An old colleague also recommended I have ‘flow and return’ valve as this will allow me to control heating in each individual room.

I am keen to have a smart system which allows me to remotely control heat across both the underfloor heating and radiators across individual parts of the house.

Please can anyone whose more knowledgeable than myself put forward any suggestions? I have looked at Which Magazine review that recommends the new Google Nest - Learning system but just not sure if this is the right system for everything I need!

I’ve also looked at Tado and Hive systems but just really confuses over which system should meet my needs!

Thanks

  • A few points to help you decide....
    1. Budget - some systems have varying costs and may need a subscription.
    2. Connectivity - check it (and the app) works with the OS of your phone and any smart speakers you may have (for example Apple HomeKit for HomePods, or ‘works with Google Assistant)
    3. WiFi - kind of like the point above but these smart systems need good WiFi (rural areas and old houses tend to not have good performance.
    4. Offers - there may be special offers (especially near Black Friday) but don’t less the override your choice.
    Hope this helps.

Why would it? You didn't mention any systems that you're aware of, far less any personal experiences.

If you have a company of experts putting your heating system in, best to ask their advice on what would be best for the system they installed.
That said, IMO, you can't really go wrong with the Nest.

Is the current installation multi zoned?
Does the underfloor have individual room stats?

Is that zoning sufficient or do you want more discreet control of rooms/rads?

You tend to run underfloor differently to radiator.

Do you want temp/time control over your hot water tank?

I did and that limited choices a lot at the time most only have time control and I may need to change my OWL system due to service charging.

  • I’ve got Honeywell evohome system for a 6 zone underfloor and 2 radiator room
system. I don’t think it’s the cheapest system but it works really well and have no complaints.

I have no personal experience in this and the only examples I can think of the OP has mentioned. I just suggested the decision making process I would use.
  • I have nest and generally find it very good. It does seem to lose connection every now and again but I think that might be more to do with wi-FI interference in the house. It’s worth noting that you will need one nest for every zone and so if you are wanting to use it to control individual rooms, it could be very expensive.
I think some other manufacturers produce smart radiator thermostats which might serve that purpose and be a lot cheaper, potentially tado? I think it might charge a subscription though and don’t really know much about it.
