Car Insurance renewal hike when moving house

My car insurance is due for renewal on 15th November. I had some quotes saved on comparison websites so knew what I was likely to be paying.

In the last few days, we have completed the purchase of a new build house about a mile from where we are now and will be moving on 9th November. When I've re-run the quotes with the new address my cheapest quote has gone from £240 to over £400. The comparison site didn't have my house number when using the 'Find address' feature (It had both of my neighbours) so that had to be manually input.

Aside from the change of postcode is there anything else that could be hiking the price? We aren't on the electoral roll at the new address nor has it been changed with any financial institutions yet. The insurer that originally offered the cheapest quote didn't provide a quote once the address changed.

  • Sounds like they aren't seeing the address on their systems.

Have you changed postcode areas? Years ago, I moved from BB12 to BB11 which affected my premium, even though the 2 houses were less than 5 mins walk from each other!

Insurance risks vary from area to area and they probably use postcodes to define .

I suspect this is your key. The new property's address isn't on file, so rather than using the correct rating for the area, it's probably defaulting to something higher-risk.

Are those neighbours part of the same new-build estate, or is this house a single infill?

I do think this could be it now I've delved a little deeper.

I went direct to the site who provided my cheapest quote at my current address and started a new quote. When I put the new postcode in, some of the addresses in my new street come up but not mine and says if you address isn't listed to contact them so guessing this could be the issue.

Both houses are in the PR8 postcode.
