Car Warranty

Do i have any chance of getting my money back. We purchased a car four years ago and ended up getting tied into a car Warranty (the salesman worded it that we wouldn't get the car loan without the warranty) My husband and myself always felt we had been duped but realised we had committed to this warranty. We where told that we would have to always have the service and mot done my them each year has the warranty worked on a 12 month basis and was only renewed if the service was done by them, we where also told that any repairs would need to be completed by them or the warranty became void. We have begrudgingly had the service and mot done by them for the past four years and had all the repairs done by them for a much higher price. The car has just failed its last mot and when I was speaking to the advisor about the length of time I would need to leave the car with them that she mentioned that if we where unhappy about the time it would take to repair the car then we could take it elsewhere to have the repairs. I corrected her saying this wasnt allowed in line with their warranty and she told us that was wrong we could have the repairs done by anyone we only needed to have the service and mot done with them for the warranty to be valid. We are annoyed that we have paid over the odds and more annoyed that we could have used my qualified mechanic brother at a much cheaper option. The advisor asked who had told us we couldn't go elsewhere and told her the salesman, she said she would look into who that was and get someone to ring us. Do I have a chance to get some money back for the over charged jobs they have done over the years or is it our own fault?

What do the written terms say with the warranty?

After looking at the warranty it says at the top "Repairs must be carried out at the supplying Stoneacre Dealership" I am assuming now that this means any repairs that are liable under the warranty and not the MOT, but I and my husband were given the impression all repairs needed to be completed by them. The warranty and mot were always due at the same time. I do recall about two years into the warranty that an estimate for mot repairs where quite high and we said to the advisor at the time we were going to have it repaired elsewhere has the cost of the warranty may not balance itself out but his sale talk again said the warranty would be void, so we decided to have them to the jobs.
  • If you were unhappy you should have cancelled it in writing at the time, not wait until 4 years later, you have no chance of getting money back for work they carried out with your agreement

We were unhappy, but that's not the issue. My post was querying about the information given at the onset that we had to have jobs done by them to keep the warranty valid and now four years down the line we have been informed that we can have repairs done anywhere. We paid over the odds for repairs because we where told we had too.

What proof do you have that this was the case?

No proof, just our understanding when we were sold the car and warranty and that it was what the salesman told us. At the time we were very reluctant but we were asking for some of the car to be on finance and he referenced that it would be unlikely we would get the car in on finance unless we purchased the warranty. And then two years down the line when we thought the repair bill was quite high we mentioned that we were going to have the jobs done cheaper elsewhere and we got told if we did that then our warranty was void, so we had them do the jobs. I understand in this claim nation that people will do anything to get some compensation back but I and my husband feel very angry about the amount of money we have spent. One job for having an exhaust fixed from them is £289 yet the average is £208. I feel we where lied to

Again then, what proof do you have of this allegation of wrongdoing?
No proof = not a snowball's chance in hell of getting any money back
