There’s a smallish  ‘white circle’ roundabout near me which has 3 quite busy roads converging on it.

All the 3 roads are separated by 120 degrees and there is no clear right of way whatsoever.

Sounds just like any other roundabout - no road has priority.

Yes of course, it’s like any other roundabout,.. nobody has priority,... thanks for pointing that out; the roads are very narrow, the roundabout is small and the turning circle is very tight. Too tight really.  It can get a little fraught sometimes especially when 3 cars arrive at the same time and all 3 are indicating ‘right’.

If two cars nose out at the same time there’s very little room for error, unlike a larger roundabout where you spy your chance and go for it!  :D

There's three 3-way mini roundabouts close together where I live.  It generally works fine, without accidents.
When it works well, everybody takes turns in going.  As a car enters the roundabout, the car on the entrance to their left has to stop, which allows the person on the right to start moving.
If somebody is too hesitant, you all end up stopped and looking at each other.  The solution is to creep forward.  Ideally, that starts the "dance" again.  If two people have the same idea at the same time, it's not a big problem as you're all moving so slowly anyway.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    Yep, your fault, sorry.

You're supposed to wait if your exit is not clear, or if you can't see. If others get annoyed about it, that's their problem. I never listen to any of my passengers who may occasionally tell me, "all right, clear this side" or anyone else who tries to tell me when it's safe to move. It won't be their fault if there's an accident, it'll be mine. I like to carry out my own surveillance because after all, I'm in charge!

My driving instructor taught me that one...

He said "Yep, you're clear..." when he knew damn well I wasn't. Ah, the joys of dual controls (which he didn't need to use, because I didn't blithely take him at face value, because I knew damn well what he was like).
  • The bus driver is at least partly liable as he signalled it was okay to go, but the problem will be proving it.

Let us know if you can find any legislation or case law to support that view.

If you can prove that the bus driver deliberately waved you out knowing/expecting you would crash and might die, he could probably be prosecuted, but he didn't.

More chance of split liability with the car overtaking the 'bus, if the 'bus was halted not at a stop, not indicating left/hazards on, then the chances are it has stopped for an obstruction/someone in the road and it is somewhat reckless to roar past it when you can't see through it.

You often find that councils with money to burn install keep left refuges alongside bus stops that aren't pull-ins to prevent overtaking the 'bus.
This is done both for safety and to prevent gridlocking traffic surrounding the 'bus and blocking the road.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Not a chance. My passenger could say to me "mow down all those pedestrians with your vehicle", it would be my fault soley if I did.
  • And this here is the perfect example of why you never wave someone out and why you never trust them waving you out (particularly a lorry or bus that you can't see through). Road is a 40mph limit in case anyone wonders - A92 in Dundee

Well he went from turbo bad-boy to smashed up sad-boy in a matter of seconds, didn't he.  Hope they were both all right and that Jamie learned a valuable lesson about reading the road properly.

It's a perfect example of a DCW failing to take the SLIGHTEST account of the conditions and what's blindingly obviously about to happen...

Here we are, driving along the road... and there's a sign warning of roadworks ahead. 31mph, 12.26.18

Look at that... You can SEE the truck stopping, and stationary traffic ahead. You can even see the car waiting to emerge from the junction. 12.26.28 - 10 sec after the roadworks sign - yet he's gained nearly 10mph, from 31 to 40.

Let's zoom in a bit on where his attention really should be right now.

...except it clearly isn't, is it?

Two seconds later, 12.26.30 - and he's actually gained 2mph as he's almost alongside the stationary truck, with a clearly visible big gap to the stationary traffic ahead. Surely he saw that side road? What could possibly have caused the truck to stop that far short...?

Oh. That was a surprise, wasn't it, children? No, not really. No sign of any braking. The GPS speedo lags slightly behind (seems to recalculate speed display every second), but...

Hands up if you're surprised that DCW Jamie is was driving a modified hot-hatch...? I do hope he declared that front-mount intercooler (lowered suspension, aftermarket alloys?) to the insurer...

...and the more you watch on, just about every single clip is a litany of lack of awareness at best, or deliberate attempts to manufacture a situation. I bet they were all pointing at the camera and mouthing "DASH CAM YOU MUPPET!"...
