Oil radiator

Hi, do these burn juice much? I'm currently working in the sitting room and having to keep going into the hall to turn the heating on/off every 5 / 10 mins. I have an oil radiator which in the kitchen which I'm thinking of bringing in so I can simply turn off and on to save me having to keep going into the hall to reach for the thermostat.

Any thoughts comments most welcome!

They'll burn exactly the same and give you exactly the same amount of heat as any other heater of the same kW rating.
But an oil filled radiator will cost you a fortune because you're using full price daytime electricity.  Even worse if you're on Economy 7 because the day rate is usually higher than single rate.
What fuel supplies your main heating and hot water?

As everyone will tell you gas costs about 2.5-3p/kwh whereas a oil filled radiator (or any other sort of electrical heater - fan, convector, radiant, halogen etc) will cost you between 12 and 16p/kwh (depending on how you pay for your leccy)

An oil filled radiator will use peak rate electricity but might work out cheaper than running the central heating for the whole house.  The thermostat should keep the room at what ever temperature you set it so although it will heat at it's full rated output until the room has warmed up the thermostat will reduce it's energy consumption just to keep the room warm. The only way you'll find out is by reading your meters to see which uses the least amount of energy over a day or so

Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • It'll be gas for heating radiators. I'll try the oil radiator and check the readings via the SED to check usage, ta.
