N power default hell help

So recently I have been trying to ensure credit score is as good as it can be and on paper it looks good, it is good/excellent on all credit agency files however over the last 6 months I've been rejected for interest free balance transfers I've applied for, which is strange as I have a mortgage and credit cards which I have never missed a single payment with.
Things took a turn for the worse when a current credit card provider wrote to me to say they would not be letting me use the card anymore as they have received adverse information from a CRA
So I look and look and see nothing at all on my credit scores, i ended up contacting experian and find out they can see a default on my account for npower.
So I was with npower for around a year and closed the account in September 2019 after a year of constant bill disputes, I'd pay large sums each quarter then be hit with another bill claiming I'd over spent, apparently for a 3 month period in which I was living in the amount I spent £989 on g&e, it was summer and the house was empty
Upon leaving I was told this was incorrect and my account was up to date but if they needed anything else they would write to me, I provided my new address.
They never wrote to me and I forgot all about them. I contacted them about this default assuming its a error and they tell me no its correct I owe almost £900. I left in September 2019 and and they registered the default may 2020 which does not make sense either.
I ask them what on earth I owe that for and if they could send me a copy of the bill, they told me they would but could not discuss further as debt with a dca. I phoned the debt collection agency after speaking to them and they tell me they do not have any debt for me in relation to Npower and ensure me if it had been passed to them I would of been contacted. So I call npower back who insist it is with this debt agency so won't help
It has now being 20 days since I requested to see this bill and I have never received it however I have received multiple messages from npower. I was first told they did not write to me about the default as they updated a online account, I told them I did not even know I had a online account so how is this fair ?
They said it is tough luck i should of thought to contact them a few months after I moved and check with them( who would do that?)
I said I wanted the default on the account removed as they didn't even inform me I owe any money 3 times they confirmed yes they did not write to me as they update online accounts.
Now this week they claim they wrote in February, they definitely did not.
I offer to just pay the bloody balance and if they will then remove it on the basis I had no clue I owed them money , I don't even care if I pay what I don't owe I just want my credit fixed, I wanted to remortage next year and I need a new car. They told me tough luck I should of known. Apparently the money I owe is because I paid too little in May 2019 and June 2019. It all makes no sense
I've complained over the phone, I've wrote to them. What can I do now?
I had a immaculate credit file in terms of payment history I've never as much as paid a day late if they had informed me I would of honestly paid it even if I didn't agree to avoid this default
I feel like they have ruined my life now I can't get any credit.
I'd pay them for someone's else's bloody energy to sort this out but I'm just met with no help at all
Any advice ?
