how do you spot Gearing behavior?

There will generally be a policy / strategy disclosed and discussed in the periodic reports and commentaries that the manager publishes from time to time, and the factsheets and periodic reports published by the investment trust will tell you to what extent they are using gearing at a point in time.
And How do you know "the value of assets"?
The value of assets is published on a daily, weekly, quarterly or half-yearly basis, depending on what the investment company has agreed with its investors.

A site like Morningstar or Trustnet will show the info for the fund, and will give a price today which people are willing to pay, an estimated NAV (net asset value) today, and a date and the exact value when the last NAV was actually calculated, The premium or discount will be a % representing the difference between price and NAV. Dig deeper and there should be a gearing % of borrowing compared to the total value of the fund.
