I Forgot that I had an SP30 Penalty from 2018 and I did not report it to my Insurance Provider.

Hello Everyone,
I have gone today into my DVLA penalties record and I just remember of a speed ticket that was given to me in November 2018, I did not remember this at the time of renewing the policy on September this year, but I would like to inform my insurance ASAP. However I am a bit concerned that they might want to cancel my policy or to put my premium up by a lot.
I was wondering if somebody has been in this situation before that can advise me.
My insurance provider is Admiral.
I guess there is not much option here as the correct and only option is to make them aware ASAP as I don't want o be in breach with the insurance policy. I was just hoping to hear somebody's else experience with this issue jut to know what to expect.
Many Thanks in advance,
Regards,

If you admit it rather than them catching you out and its only one SP30/ no prior convictions then they are unlikely to cancel the policy. As to the impact on premiums, they are the only ones that will be able to tell you.

The one thing is that they cannot make you pay the additional premium, but they can cancel the policy if you refuse to do so. Were you to have a claim whilst it was ongoing and you hadnt paid the extra premium then they'd be entitled to reduce the claim by the percentage of under premium paid (ie if they say the SP30 is an extra 50% then any claim in the meantime would be reduced by 1/3)

In 2006 I got an SP30 on the second day of owning my first car. I was young and naive and never updated my insurance company. I also just accepted the renewals without ammending details over the next couple of years. In 2008 I had an accident, wrote my car off (value £500) and another car (value £5000) and damaged a third (value unknown). When I was on the phone to Direct Line they asked me if I had any unreported speeding fines to which I said yes and gave them the details. Can't remember exactly what was said but it didn't affect the insurance paying out for the other cars but it would have affected the pay out for my car had I been comprehensive. I was only TPFT so that didn't matter and the only negative thing was my premium was adjusted for the rest of the year to take it into account. Barely increased the premium at all.
Upon renewal though with an at fault accident to disclose, losing my 2 years no claims and being 21 made it SKYROCKET lol.

EDIT: I'm not saying just ignore it btw, update them ASAP.
  • I am pretty sure Admiral do check these things out. I recall several years ago my wife did not notify them that she had attended a speed awareness course. In fact she had been told by the course organisers that she did not need to declare this! Several months later she received a communication from Admiral informing her that they had been informed that she had attended such a course and sought confirmation of the particulars. To this day I do not know how they discovered this.
The fact was noted on her insurance record, but I do not recall if there was a premium adjustment. Certainly the policy was not cancelled.

Is it just me or have we had a spate of new users who have "forgotten" various accidents or convictions ?

There has but most have been because one or two brokers have started quoting cheap but then asking for documents straight after inception and so we've had both forgotten convictions and inaccurate dates come up a lot... less of these ones where someone remembers off their own accord.

I would report it, Insurance companies do look into these things, especially when a claim is put in, most now ask for permission to bring DVLA into the conversation checking any offenses (Admiral do)  I wouldn't expect it to be a massive amount (£36 to £50, but each insurance company has their own assessment)

so when you get to the question have you had any driving convictions in the last 5 years, the OP ticked no?? You would have thought that would have served as a cue to remember. I hope you have answered other questions correctly as well as anything incorrect will be used as a basis to refuse any claim due to fraud

Did you remember it when you renewed in September 2019 - and if so, was that the same insurer?

The impact will depend on the OP’s driving record.  If they are young and/or have only just passed their test then a single SP30 will likely make a difference to their insurance cost, perhaps even cancellation.  If the OP is an older, experienced driver with many years of no claims a single SP30 Will likely make no difference at all.
BUT, it is most definitely a material fact and should be disclosed.  Not doing so could cause some awkward and expensive problems if the OP needs to make a claim under their current policy.  We all like to moan about insurance companies wriggling out of claim payments, so why hand them a perfect excuse?!
