0871 and 1899 problem

I had to call Easyjet customer services after they cancelled a flight I was booked onto. I kept trying to get through on their 0871 number via 1899 (I have a V2 dialler). Each time the recorded message told me the call was free and then that the number was engaged.
Eventually I just dialled it directly and got through to their automated menu straight away. Was this just luck or is their a problem calling 0871, or 0871 and automated switchboards, using 1899?
No reliance should be placed on the above.

I'm not aware that you can use it; they don't mention 0871 on their website, and it's very unlikely to be available anywhere cheaper than BT

The cheapest supplier of calls to 0871 numbers is BT as Andy suggests.18866/1899 do not offer calls to them.Nor do they offer calls to 0844 i believe.

If you havent already done so,might i suggest you programme your V2 so that all 0500/0800/0808/0844/0845/0870/0871 calls go through BT.Because 18866/1899 dont allow access to freephone numbers and calls to NGN are cheaper through BT.

Thanks guys, although as I am with ntl I think 0870 and 0845 numbers are still cheaper through 1899. I'll do the rest though.

Crafty beggers at easyjet. Where is their geographical number?

hmm found an interesting quote on the ofcom website.
0870 (3) is not recommended, particularly when targeting individuals as by dint of falling call rates for geographic numbers, 0870 numbers have become tantamount to a low end premium rate number, which can be significantly more expensive to the caller than a geographic number and act as a barrier to information that the citizen should have access to as a right. If 0870 must be used, we stronglyrecommend that other alternatives – i.e. a standard geographical number offered in parallel (4), the web or postal mechanisms should be considered and made available to give citizens a choice. 0870 might beappropriate in a business environment, but even here its use should be treated with cautio

It is cheaper to phone EasyJet in Holland on 0031235684880 using 1899.(I believe the call is routed back to Luton Airport.)

I found this info doing a search of recent postings on the site https://www.saynoto0870.com

Reminds me of the time I used an American dial-up ISP as I could call USA for 3p a minute with One-Tel and 0845 cost 4p a minute. This was of course before all the cheap deals and broadband! It didn't work out as the connection speed was a fair bit slower than a UK ISP.

I agree and he had all fantastic points that OfCOM couldn't ignore but as it turned out OfCOM just brushed it under their carpet with everything else probably as if it never existed! :wall: :silenced:
