Covid WFH Tax allowance of £6 per week (so a £1.20 benefit)

When I try to claim this on line, because I do self assessment it says that I need to claim it that way.

I am doing my self assessment on line now, but cannot find where on the forms to claim this.

I see no mention of use of home as an office anywhere.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

I found the P87 from there and submitted it as advised.

    Thanks

oh dear, you don't understand what you are doing. If required to do SA you can't use a P87 - the point of SA is it covers everything, a P87 is for those not in SA
hence the article clearly states: you can claim the allowance as part of the self assessment form (it's included on section 20 on the full return and section 2.5 on the short form)

I do online self assessment and I couldn't get that section to appear?
If I could find it on the online assessment I can modify it.

Presumably I need to wait a year to fill in the 2020/21 return for this?

Even though I should get it straight away according to Martin ...

MRC says, "We recognise that the working from home situation is very fluid this year, and so we’re accepting claims for the full year’s expenses, even if people have only worked from home for some of the year. This includes customers claiming through Self Assessment."
  • You need to tailor your return correctly.

Presumably HMRC will shed your P87 back with a note saying it doesn't apply as you have filed a Self Assessment return for that tax year.

If I put work expenses of £312 in the 2019/20 it works but this is for 2020/21 really, so it is wrong.

I could add a clarifying comment as to the nature of the £312 I suppose, it just seems wrong or counter-intuitive.

You could argue it is not worth claiming, but I went over the £1,000 savings interest that tax year due to some maturing fixed rate accounts (decent rates, now non existent) so it would offset the extra tax due there.

You cannot claim employment expenses for 2020:21 on your 2019:20 Self Assessment return.

Maybe I'm being thick but what exactly, in plain English, are you trying to do????

Claim the allowance for 2020/21. If you are not self assessment you can claim the £312 allowance straight away for the current tax year with the microservice. Not sure how to claim if straight away if you do self assessment. It may well be that you can't, but it isn't clear.

I have done a P87 for the current tax year but it may be rejected if I am in self assessment?

i suspect that means when you submit the SA since patently that is the only way anything on an SA will be "in" the system to generate a claim/tax adjustment

So I have to wait a year then. No biggie, just wanted clarification as nowhere seems to say that one way or the other.

    It's only £62.40 after all.
