I've had a response in chat to say there was an issue with the final bill after all 🙉
They're processing an amendment and I only have to pay half of the £500.78 to make up for what should have been paid in earlier months as it was higher than their estimates.

Relieved is an understatement!! Thank you all. Harsh learn indeed and know for future to start doing these readings myself!!

If you have difficulty paying, ask for a payment plan.  However, you won't be able to leave while you're in debt.  Remember that some competitive suppliers will take their first DD when you start with them, or even shortly before, so read the Ts & Cs carefully.
Separate suppliers are often cheaper than dual fuel, so check all options and do the sums carefully.
Gas meter readings must always be sent as cubic metres or (hundreds of) cubic feet, never kWh.  The supplier will do the conversion from volume to kWh.

@Perksy5  If you don't know how to read your meters - how did you manage to give readings to BG who I assume was the supplier when you moved in or switched ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Some new suppliers take on the debt or previous suppliers allow customer to leave with debt. Some let them go in error!

Sorry but £300pa for gas and electricity was always going to be ridiculously low. The UK average is nearly 4 times that.
PS: each bill you get shows against the meter reading whether it is estimate (E), agent (A) or customer (C). Send monthly reads in future.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
