    Hi
I have just finished speaking to the lady at local council and learnt that I need to pay 50% council tax for not living in the house!

You may benefit from my free council tax sitting service ;) I move in to your house (you can leave the furniture there) and pay your council tax in lieu of rent...no minimum tenancy necessary, flexible terms...all jobs considered, large or small :D

I believe SquatNow also operates in this sector..but I cater for the higher end of the market!

Part of the "manifesto" as it were of Social Squatting is that the Social Squatters maintain the place and pay all bills including the council tax.

You give the Social Squatters 6 months notice when you want the place back and they move out, making sure to clean up after themselves, forward their mail, and hand you the keys and the alarm code.
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

Council tax, payable by the occupant is unfair.

All taxes should be scrapped and replaced by a land value tax.

At the same time scrap all benefits and give every man, woman and child a "land tax allowance" of, say £10000 per year.

If they don't use their allowance they get a tax rebate.

Thus you can choose to live in a big house in london, get a job, and pay high land tax. Or you could choose to move and live in very low value land in, say, scotland, and get most of your £10k as a tax rebate. no jobs, but you could live off of the rebate.

Note: Actual numbers for example only!

i saw that one on the news a few years ago with one of the arch neo cons saying if we gave everyone 1k a month we would still be better off than we are now.

peronally i loved the idea but especially the idea of making government services like schools and health care a consumer choice but the really great bit was the way it was an active disadvantage to people breeding for benifits.

1k a month sounds a lot but if you think about what comes off your wages, add about 30% on top of that which your employer pays, add 17.5% of everything you buy in a month and 65% of what you pay in petrol plus and it soon starts adding up. Its not like the government even spends a decent ammount of it on the basic infrastructure like roads.

You are lucky you are getting 50% discount and it is just a short term thing until you have sold your property.

My husband is in the HM Armed Forces. We have just been posted to Germany (not by our choice) for 4 years and we are only able to claim 10% discount on the council tax for our property in the UK. We also have to pay CILOCT (Charges In Lieu of Council Tax) in Germany which are as much as the taxes we pay in the UK for a smaller property in the middle of an estate filled with Kurdish immigrants. And we have to pay this 12 months of the year!!!

hi there, sorry, please bear with me, as I am new to this.
Just needed to let everyone know, if you are married to a member of the HM Forces or are in the forces themselves, the council tax discount is 25%.
I applied for the discount and saved £288 a year. Got a letter two days later to tell me that this has been back dated for 3 years, therefor we only have £95 left to pay for the rest of this year! :T

All you need is a letter from the Company 2IC to state that you are paying CILOCT and how much this is.

I hope that this helps people as the council will not tell you about this discount.

move the furniture out and it may be free, it is in birmingham, 6 months 0 council tax and you can then re apply for a further 6 months.

ofcourse if only the rear and upstairs is furnished, do the council need to know?

The property must either be occupied and the relevant charge paid or furnished and the relevant charge paid for a minimum of 6 weeks before the 6 months Class C exemption can be claimed again.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I had a similar conversation with my local council and was very pleased.
I have 2 houses (due to work relocation) and am selling one of them.
Phoned them up and they said Free for 6 months then 50% after that.

They wanted confirmation that it was on market and empty with no furniture.
I told them it had bed and kitchen utilities but only until i sorted out a van to move them.

Found them really helpful. I guess they need to be tight to avoid people claiming they are not living there when they are.
Looking at the figures some councils have written off hundreds of millions in unclaimed council tax and thats all money which has to come from somewhere.
