Dodgy DPD or a bad neighbour

Dad took in a parcel for a neighbour and dpd took dads name and a photo of our door...the neighbour came home straight away and dad handed the parcel over...today a neighbour further up the street is saying a parcel was left with us for her...we dont normally take stuff in for any other neighbours but DPD have given her my dads name and a photo of our door...so we think it was this one we handed over to our neighbour...long story short I think our neighbour has pocketed the goods and we are going to get the blame...the delivery driver was going up their stairs and said it was for them though...

    That's not good.
  • I'm very upset and having an anxiety attack over it...

Why did your dad hand a parcel to the wrong neighbour?  Surely the recipient's name was on it?

The goods remain the responsibility of the retailer (if that's who sent it) until they reach the proper recipient.
  • Its not quite that black and white...the driver was going up the neighbours steps and said it was for them and as we have taken stuff in for them before we took them off him...but the neighbour literally turned up as the man was driving off in his van...so dad handed them over (there were two parcels see so the smaller one was probably over the label of the bigger one) but we were led to believe they were for him by the delivery guy...
  • Plus my dad is 74...he thinks he is trying to be a good neighbour but this neighbour is not the nicest neighbour...he has opened my parcels by "accident" before...this parcel seems to have contained some expensive items too...

If he was just on his way up the steps, why didn’t he try and ring the neighbours door first before giving it to your Dad...

How did you dad even get involved if the driver was just ‘heading up their stairs’ I wouldn’t take a parcel off a driver who was halfway down my neighbours drive cos it would be clear the driver hadn’t knocked on their door...
  • The neighbours often pop out quickly for stuff and dad saw them leave and was out the front when the delivery guy was walking up the stairs...he said they had gone out and the guy said could we take it in for them...

Sorry but this sounds pretty unlikely.

I suggest your dad doesn’t try to interject with parcels in future and just allow the driver to to do their job.
  • How is it unlikely if thats what happened?! Dad did not interject he just told the guy they were not home...he was then asked if he could take the parcels in for them...which we have done in the past

I find it unlikely that the DPD driver didn’t even attempt to deliver and just handed it over to a random person outside the house next door. I would perhaps understand if he was on his way back down and he said ‘oh he’s just nipped out, I can take it’ but to tell the driver that and for the driver to take his word for it? Unlikely.
