Heard about this "trick" but I'm not sure.
But I can see why people do it to clean gunk and grime from the pipes rather than expect a sparkling machine.

I can't see dishwasher tabs being good for the metal drum on the washing machine.  Probably ok if you don't expect to keep your washing machine for long or are happy to replace the drum from time to time.  My machine is on its original drum at 20 years old.

We are having issues with our washer dryer not drying properly so as a last resort have cleaned it today with this:

    https://www.dr-beckmann.co.uk/product/service-it-deep-clean/

I was absolutely disgusted at the amount of debris, gunk and general filth that the product has cleared from the machine. It had to be seen to be believed as it was swilling around in the drum. Not had chance to check if it is working properly after it's clean yet but if it is it will be lesson learned and we will use this stuff every few months to keep the machine clean and fresh.

Whilst it shouldn't cause too much of a problem I wouldn't do something outside you manufacturer's recommendations particularly if you're still within a warranty period. Personally, doing a 90 degree maintenance wash using normal washing powder and some white vinegar is perfectly adequate to keep your machine clean.

Domestic washers get full of gunk , because
A.... they are cold fill only
B... most use eco washes which are lower temperatures
    C .... the use of biological powders/liquids

there’s nothing you can do about the cold fill, afaik, they are all like this, you can use a non bio powder occasionally ( if you don’t want to use it all the time, or you have sensitive skin)
and, as someone suggested, run it on a 90deg wash about once a month, of buy a dedicated cleaner, or use the vinegar, hack...

Since that product is mainly activated charcoal, I think I would expect the water to look pretty filthy as it swilled around the drum!  For comparison, you could try crushing up a barbecue briquette and see if it looks any different! :)
