United Airlines Covid Travel Refund

Hi there,
I had a flight booked with United airlines for early march. The day I was meant to fly the USA went into lockdown and people from the UK weren't allowed to enter, therefore my flight was canceled. At the time United Airlines were only offering flight credits. I took it thinking COVID would not last as long as it has and therefore no longer want to fly. United Airlines are refusing me a refund and are still only offering the credits- please bear in mind I was ONLY offered credits, to begin with, before anyone knew how long Coronavirus would last.
I have tried to claim on my insurance but they say they cannot offer me a refund as United Airlines are offering me a chance to rebook or voucher. I had plans to visit a friend and my friend no longer lives there (due to Covid) and I have now no reason to go.
What are my rights? What can I do? I want to get my full refund of 371.57 GBP back.
Many thanks,
Grace

  • You can try a claim with your credit / debit card provider - however you may get the same answer.
Unfortunately a lot of companies are taking the view that a voucher is valid, so aren't offering anything more.

can you clarify if the airline cancelled the flight or whether it operated but you could not take it (some US routes have continued to operate throughout the pandemic even with the restrictions)

Caz3121 raises a good question. Is it ‘my flight was cancelled’ or ‘changes to US immigration and entry requirements meant that my travel plans had to be cancelled’?
  • Hi there, I can't remember exactly but I'm 90% sure that the flight was cancelled but as it happened so quickly the first thing I did was try and get a refund.
