I have been gifted a large wooden trunk, which l want to paint quite a dark blue. Can anyone recommend a suitable paint brand for this please? I know about Frenchic, just wondered if there were any other options that have been used.

Pretty much any oil based paint (gloss/satin etc) would be suitable and be hard wearing
Trade paint is the best quality however a quality DIY brand like Dulux would be suitable

What finish do you want - 'satin' or chalky matt? Do you want a solid colour, or some translucency with the timber grain showing through? How durable must it be - what will it be subjected to? If not a lot, good chance you could use water-based ('solvent-free') paints which are much nicer to use.1

Whatever you use preparation is key so make sure you sand it down and prime it first then another light sand before applying the finishing coats of paint.1

@Jeepers_Creepers I want it to be a solid colour. It is for dressing up clothes for DD, 8 year old. It will be opened once every couple of weeks. Not too fussed between matt or silk.
@neilmcl specific primer or watered down white?0 -
Use a proper wood primer or if the wood's been varnished you could use Zinsser BIN. Don't use a watered down mist coat, particularly if you're going to then use an oil based wood paint over the top.@Jeepers_Creepers I want it to be a solid colour. Actually, as it's for a kid's box then I'd probably go for a chalk/egg shell finish but still use the primer.1 -
No it's not been varnished. Will look into Zinsser, thank you.0
