Non refundable hotel booking South Africa

Hello everyone,

I wondered whether people could advise or recommend the best course of action on my holiday booking

My wife and I booked our honeymoon back in January to visit Cape Town in South Africa for 9 days in November.

We booked the flights direct via British Airways and the Table Bay hotel in Cape Town via Stay for Long .. the room we paid for was a non refundable booking. We booking our worldwide travel insurance back in January and paid on credit card for extra protection.

The hotel has advised they will hold the booking open for 12 months but we cannot guarentee we will be able to fly into the country in the next 12 months and have no guarantee that the hotel will still be trading.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you
Marc

  • Sadly Marc the drawback of booking separately which many people are finding out in this situation.   If the hotel is open at the time you are due to be there then they do not have to offer you anything on a non refundable booking.  A rebook is about as good as it gets from them.  Your credit card provider would not be able to offer any help in those circumstances (if the hotel is open).  Have BA offered you a refund or rebook for flights or is it a case of wait and see?

Your only option may be your insurance.  Check to see what you are covered for.

Sorry it isn't more positive news.

Seems a fair and reasonable offer.  We all take risks when arranging our own travel arrangements and opting for non refundable bookings in order to reduce the cost to the bare minimum.

I’m sorry you find yourself in this position but Tedber and Thrugelmir have explained it well.

I would advise speaking to your travel insurance company to see if there’s anyway of recouping the money other than that their offer is generous and is the only other option to you.
  • Your credit card company won't help, as it's not the hotel's fault you can't get there.
Your only option is travel insurance, but as above they may not pay out if you've been given a voucher.
