Should I charge rent for the extra room?

I was in a similar position with my mrs. I moved into her house, because the rental potential from mine was much larger. We split the household bills 50/50, with exception of the mortgage for obvious reasons, but I paid for the food, the holidays, everything for the cars, the phones and replaced stuff when it broke, such as laptops and the washing machine. I was on a much better wage than her and I had the rental income, so I was happy to do it, even though she never asked.

for me, the differentiation would be that he is only able to earn that rental income because of me.  if he earned more in salary then that is not because of me at all.  that is from his own merits.

To be honest that just seems a bit petty to me, I've enabled my Husband to go to uni, when he does eventually return to work I wouldn't expect a higher contribution because I supported and facilitated an increase in his earning capacity.
