But the point that @Gasman_81 makes on the account details # out is a basic security procedure. No online 3rd party system should be showing your full account details used to make a payment.
huh, I can view the sort code and account numbers of accounts in all of my online banking apps, why would NS&I be any different and what security risk would it pose beyond someone having access to the account in the first place?

You can see the details about your NS&I accounts but all you can see about your nominated account(s) (the ones you can make withdrawals to) once set up are the last 4 digits of the account number, alongside the name of the bank. Other than removing the nominated account and re-adding it, you have no means of seeing the full sort code and account number. An obvious bypass of accidentally sending money to a wrong account is to make a £1 test withdrawal - after double- and triple-checking that you actually entered the correct details.

Yes, it was a silly error. However, if you add an additional account, sort codes for subsequent accounts then become visible. I don't see why they have decided to have different degree of visibility when you add subsequent accounts. That is baffling.
I can see the same kind of information for both my nominated accounts. For example, this is what I see in the 'change details' dialogue. It's the only place I could find which shows the sort code but the first 4 digits of the account number are always asterixed out.

    Why not?
    Security...
    Plain & simple.

Yes your bank account will show the full details as you have logged in via your security details, but should a 3rd party account get hacked and show any full account details linked to it. You can imagine the outrage of the lack of security by them.

Does your Amazon or PayPal account show the payment card/account details in full?  No.
    Life in the slow lane
  • I think you are mistaken, the NS and I site DOES NOT show the full account number.

We're at risk of going over the age-old "but Jeremy Clarkson once got caught out" scare story again. There's no reason whatsoever why I shouldn't be able to see my own account number and sort code that I want to withdraw money to from my NS&I account. Even if somebody managed to gain unauthorised access to my NS&I account, what could they do with my sort code and account number? Other than sending my money to my current account, or to set up an unauthorised DD that I can reverse under the DD guarantee?

You need to be more specific about which account number you referring to.
  • Yes. That is the point I have been trying to make to them.

The bank account of the customer. I logged into check and found it doesn't list the full account number anywhere I can see.
