Call them to set up an account and give the opening readings. As you now know how rubbish they are, you'll then be free to switch. The switch will be handled by your new supplier(s), so your only further interaction with BG will be to pay the final bill.

Nowadays,  separate suppliers are usually cheaper.
  • Hi,
BG are not your supplier until you have set up an account with them, though they will be your 'demeed' supplier if, as you say, the previous occupier used them.
I think the 'moving home' function is for customers leaving BG.
As already said, take meter readings, phone BG and set up an account, don't get tied into one with exit fees, then search about for best deal.

The OP isn't going to BG, they're moving into a property supplied by BG. They have to set up an account with BG regardless of whether they want to be with BG or not, since you can't leave until you have an account.
  • I managed to get through to someone today and they told me that the website is actually buggy right now and set me up with an account then and there. I chose their standard rate as there's no exit fee, since I'm not moving in straight away (decorating) so shouldn't be using that much energy. I'll shop around for a better deal real soon!
    Thanks all for your replies.
