Hi, looking for a little bit of advice here.
Today i received a letter from my bank which i no longer use but never closed the account. Being honest, i knew i was about £75 o/d but i was gonna pay this off after christmas. Then, a few days ago a yearly membership direct debit of £33 was taken out of the account which i had totally forgot about and as a result of this the bank is gonna take £30 for paing the DD and £28 for going over my £100 o/d limit. £58 for going o/d is a total rip, so i phoned them up fuming about it and said im going to pay what i am overdrawn in to the bank and close my account before the charges come out, to which she replied we wont let you do that.
Is this crap or what? can i close my account before the charges come out? stupid bank hasn't leaned a thing lately.
anyone know any options for me?
thanks, keb

It's unlikely the bank will close the account if there is an amount owing.
You could try and speak to them calmly and see if they will refund the charge. If your last conversation involved you 'fuming', they may not have been too keen to help.
If this doesn't work, the only option really is to write to them and request a refund.0 -

Fuming at a customer service agent will not help your cause nor will theatening to close your account prior to charges being set as they simply won't close it and will demand payment from you.
Try visiting your branch and requesting politely that someone look into the circumstances and you may just get a more favourable response.
If they don't reverse the charges there is absolutely nothing you can do about it as the oversight was clearly your mistake and not theirs.0 -
But £58, surely thats a bit steep!! i never signed up to that!!Total debt £20,761 on 29/08/07

Ah, but you did! Read the Terms & Conditions.
AND it was you who "forgot" about your standing order. Is there any excuse these days, with Internet banking, to forget about how your account is operating?
It's tough, approach the bank with care and learn from this.0 -
This is how it is today.
If it is the bank's error they will refund charges.
If it is the customer's fault they won't.
As I see it the bank have not made an error here.
He could start the process to get his charges back once the account is closed!0
