Tax credit debt

Hello ,
Can anyone offer any advice please.?Today I received a letter from HRMC advising me of tax credit debt from 2009/2010/2011 and 2012 totaling over 9k. This is the first I am
aware of this.
I was living with my ex at the time and we split in 2012 and I claimed as a single person ending in 2018 when my eldest turned 18. I tried to call them today however the advisor was unable to see the reasons for OP only that they are on the system and told me to call payment helpline on Monday.
I have just this year completed a DAS from other debts he saddled me with and this has made me feel so low as I thought I was getting back on my feet.

Will I be liable for entire amount and can anyone offer any advise please? I am not sure if the reasons for Op i work FT .
Thanks

When you split with your ex did you report the changes? He will also be responsible for half the debt.
